When bad things happen – in “isolation or as apparently singular occurrence”

Preface: why God allows these bad things to happen, is because God is love, He loves us all. God loves the creation of His Hands. He does not desire the death of the sinner, but that we should repent and return to Him. He continues to give us chance after chance, opportunity after opportunity, to change, to truly repent and return unto Him. God is humble, gentle, kind, faithful, compassionate, merciful, though Holy, righteous and just, but at the same time forgiving, persevering, persistent, exhausting all means possible and ever enduring and He will leave ninety-nine sheep to search for one lost sheep to bring back to the fold. By His Grace, we are saved. The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God (that is in Christ Jesus) and the sweet fellowship of the Holy Spirit (God is Holy and desires fellowship with us), be with us now and forever more. Amen.

Isaiah 45 v7
I form the light and create darkness,
I bring prosperity and create disaster;
I, the LORD, do all these things.
Whenever I quote this verse to friends and relatives, they don’t like, they find it impossible that God “can create disaster”.

Genesis 21 v8-20
Hagar and Ishmael sent away; Sarah demanded it because she didn’t want Ishmael to share in Isaac’s inheritance. And when Abraham consulted God, God told him to listen to his wife, and he did and sent both the mother of his first born child and his first born child away.
I don’t know about you, but as a father, sending your son and his mother away into the desert is a calamity or disaster.
Genesis 37 v12-28
It was a caravan of Ishmaelites that bought Joseph and sold him on in Egypt, his place of fulfilment of destiny.
Everything works out for the good of God.
Ruth chapters 1 to 4
The story of Naomi and Ruth a Moabite who then married Boaz is well known. It was a disaster that happened to Naomi in the land of Israel (famine) that made her and her husband and two sons fled to the land of the Moabites. Her husband and two sons died there, another disaster. Then she returned with Ruth who ended up marrying Boaz. The line from which King David came from.
1 Samuel 22 v1-4
David’s family resided with the Moabites when he was fleeing from Saul. Once again everything works for the good of God.
When God does things, we might not understand, but God is good all the time and all the time God is good.

Isaiah 45 v7

I form the light and create darkness,
I bring prosperity and create disaster;
I, the Lord, do all these things.

When I was trying to get my daughter to take this bitter medicine (she found it hard to swallow, that God creates prosperity as well as disaster), I told her to read the verse as follows: “I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and allow disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.”

By substituting the word create with allow, just before the word “disaster”, I think I was able to make the verse more palatable or digestible for her. And we see in Job 1 v12 that God operated in this way. The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man, himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. This was a precursor to what God announced through Prophet Zechariah in the book of Zechariah, chapter 13 verse 7, which our Lord Jesus Christ cited in the book of Matthew, chapter 26 verses 31 to 32, the night before He was murdered, Zechariah 13:7; “Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the Lord Almighty. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones. Matthew 26:31-32; Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[c] 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” Verse 32 was literally fulfilled shortly after crucifixion and metaphorically being fulfilled till today and tomorrow, as Jesus promised in the gospel of John, chapter 14 verses 2 and 3; My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. God allows these “bad” things because He loves us. He wants to bring us back to Himself, true Fellowship, in spirit and in truth, by the removal of the barrier of sin that separate us from Him through the Blood of Christ.

When bad things happen

Psalm 139 verse 21; Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?

Matthew 22 verses 36-40; “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Occasionally there has been discussions with people who profess not to believe in God, and on such occasions, these people have made statements or posed questions such as: If there is a God, why does He allow bad/evil things to happen? Such as the killing of 6 million Jews by the Nazi’s during the second world war.

There have been people who experienced terrible things, accidents and victims of horrendous crimes; one of the most common statements or questions from these people is: why me? A pastor once while preaching a sermon, said that his reply to such a question from his parishioner; is: if not you, then should it be me?

Bad things happen to good people, bad people and to God. Yes, to God. Surprising isn’t, well it does, otherwise King David, under the influence of the Holy Spirit wouldn’t have stated it in Psalm 139 verse 21. There are those who hate God. Jesus Christ said the most important commandment is to Love God. Which means to break the most important commandment, is to commit the greatest sin.

The Ten commandments in Exodus 20 verses 1-17; And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labour and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbour’s house. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.”

People worship their children, spouses, money, power, gods created by themselves, elements such as earth, wind, water and fire, stars, constellations, seers, practitioners of dark arts, angels, demons, spiritual entities and others.

People have for thousand of years claimed to speak for God, and people continue to claim to have messages from God and do things and have done things in the name of God.

People have and continue to desecrate the things of God, such as the day that God said should be set aside, to be Holy, day of rest, shops are opened on Sundays in many Western countries nowadays.

In the Gospel of Matthew chapter 23 verse 9, Jesus Christ said; And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. People dishonour God, and some people share God’s honour by setting themselves up as spiritual fathers to others.

In most societies, the greatest crime possible to commit is murder. People have murdered God. It sounds jarring to the ear, but that is a fact, when our Lord Jesus Christ was murdered, crucified, that is plain simple murder. Remember Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son, born of the Holy Spirit. God the Son.

People have committed adultery; this is not adultery in the sense that a married person sleeping with the spouse of another. This is in the sense of a people betrothed to God, being involved with another false god: an example of which is in the book of Hosea chapter 3 verse 1; The Lord said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.”

People have stolen from God and do continue to steal from God, an example of which can be found in the book of Malachi, chapter 3 verse 8; “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.”

People give false testimony against God, regularly, such as Prophet Hananiah giving a false testimony against God, prophesying things that God did not say, contradicting Prophet Jeremiah in the book of Jeremiah chapters 27 and 28.

Lastly, others have coveted things that belong to God, such as praise and Glory, the devil has, and other agents of the devil has and still do.

Therefore, when all these Laws are broken, when all these sins are committed against God, the Creator of all things, whether accidentally or wilfully, then of course these bad things are bound to happen and have happened to people.

Another perspective to the question: why God allows these bad things to happen, is because God is love, He loves us all. Amen.

SAY NOT I AM A CHILD

Say not I am a child and forget that you are the strength of a nation.

Say not I am a child and forget that it is better to make hay while the sun shines.

Say not I am a child and forget that a person is known by the company he keeps.

Say not I am a child, and forget that as you make your bed, so must you lie on it.

Say not I am a child and forget that there is a time to speak and a time to be silent.

Say not I am a child and forget that man must not live by bread alone, but God’s word.

Say not I am a child and forget that a little knowledge is dangerous.

Say not I am a child and forget that learning brings life to your live.

Say not I am a child and forget that your words can either make or mar your future.

Say not I am a child and forget that it is a sign of strength to embrace needful changes.

Say not I am a child, and undermine the Salvation of God, even Jesus Christ.

Say not I am a child, and shun a true relationship with your Maker, therein lies your life.

JUST HOLD ON

How time flies! It was as if the year 2018 ended last month and everybody was basking in joy for the grace to witness 2019. That every right-thinking person expects this year to be more promising than the previous in every facet of life cannot be disputed. After all, the Lord Almighty himself said, ‘The glory of this present house (year) will be greater than the glory of the former house (year)…’ (Haggai 2 vs 9a), and I, the Lord will ‘…give you hope and a future’ (Jeremiah 29 vs 11b).

For some people, this year had indeed been a year of remarkable and copious promotions and fulfilment; while for some, 2019 has been like treading on nails, the ground so dry that they could barely plant any crop, not to talk of harvesting. Shall we then conclude that the Lord our God has been unfaithful or contest the authenticity of his word? Definitely no!

He is a covenant keeping God: in Psalm 89 vs 34, God tells us: ‘I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered’. So, he has not forgotten you; as a matter of fact, God cannot forget those who have been clothed with Christ and have also been baptised unto Christ.

Besides, he is a merciful God, and he has not only crown you lavishly with loving kindness and tender mercies but his mercy upon your life also endures forever (Ps 103, 107, 118, 136). So be rest assured that whatever mountain is hindering your breakthrough will surely depart and the hills will be removed, but the mercy of God upon your life will never fail, according to the book of Isaiah. Likewise, God cannot forget you and his beautiful plans for your life. In Isaiah 49 vs 16, God equally assures us that even if a mother that is breastfeeding her baby can forget her suckling baby and not show the baby mercy, he said, I cannot forget you, I have engraved you on the palm of my hands with the living blood of Jesus, your walls (life/destiny) are ever before me, so I think of you every second of the day and night (24/7).

Additionally, there is nothing that the love and power of God cannot do for you. In Psalm 62 vs 11-12, ‘One thing has God spoken, two things I have heard; “Power belongs to you, God, and with you is unfailing love…” God is saying to you today: ‘I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?’ (Jeremiah 32 vs 27). Do you believe that? Then if you do, just hold on, for he will surely visit you. If he did not spare his son, Jesus Christ to ensure your total redemption from sin and hell, then what is it that you are expecting God to do for your or give you that he will say no, inasmuch as what your desire does not nullify his plans for your life?

Don’t ever think that God redeemed you from the kingdom of darkness into his glorious light to wallow in shame. He has promised us in the books of Isaiah and Joel that we shall not be ashamed, nor confounded world without end. We must hold on to God’s promise because in Isaiah 43 vs 10, he equally tells us that: ‘…I alone am God. There is no other God – there never has been, and there never will be’  be another God, a fact which is affirmed in Revelation 4 vs 8 as ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come’. God emphasises this truth also in Is 44 vs 6; 45 vs 14,18, 21 and 22; 64 vs 4; 46 vs 9; Hosea 13 vs4; Joel 2 vs 27. Based on this infallible truth, you should be rest assured that in spite of your current situation, know that God stands as God alone in your life and everything that concerns you, and none can oppose him. Once he has made his decision, who can change his mind? When he works, who can hinder him, or reverse what he has done or sets to do? Whatever he wants to do, he does. So let your mind be at rest because he will do to you and for you whatever he has planned; for he controls your destiny. (Job 23 vs 13-14 & Isaiah 43 vs 13).

As such, even though time flies and soars on the wings of eagles, yet runs and never grow weary, and time continually walks, without getting tired for it forever renews its strength through the ever existing day and night, even then when it is time for your new nation to be born, God will not close the womb of your life; your new nation will assuredly be born. ‘Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth and shut the womb? saith thy God’ (Isaiah 66 vs 9.)  Just hold on to him faithfully and lovingly for he cares for you, when you are in pain, he is in pain too (Isaiah 63 vs 9).

FIBRES OF DILIGENCE

Diligence is not a matter of compulsion or coercion, but inherent character attribute; just as negligence is. Diligence and negligence are like chalk and cheese. Cheese is edible and can nourish while chalk can do neither. Need I add that negligence should be avoided like the plague. A brief explanation what negligence is will bring out a vivid picture of what diligence is. Negligence is the act of wilfully shirking responsibilities and lacking concern in every worthwhile venture. It is a deliberate failure to act with the prudence that any reasonable person would exercise when faced with any similar situation.

Now, let’s get down to the brass tacks of this piece, which is the fibre of diligence. Diligence or persistent work effort, is a fabric that is made up of delicate but firm fibres. Fibres in this perspective talks about the inherent laudable attributes that is visible in a man of diligence.

A diligent man is distinguished by the mark of thorough care and perseverance in carrying out tasks without complains, coupled with firmness of purpose. Accordingly, Proverbs 22:29 asks us: Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

Diligence falls under two categories; one is partial while the other is total. A man exhibits partial diligence if kudos could be given to him in one or two of these spheres: vocation, ministry, home and society. Contrariwise, a man that receives encomium in all these fields has portrayed  total diligence. Let’s scan through the intrinsic fibres of a diligent knight.

First, a diligent don is a busy man who is actively involved  in a work so as to achieve a laudable and beneficent purpose. His innate hardworking trait enables him to work like a beaver, industriously and enthusiastically.

Second, he exercise caution in all his dealings by showing care, zeal and attention.

Third, a diligent man is prudent. Every decision he takes is marked by sound judgement. As a provident father, through the leading of the Holy Spirit he has earmarked a godly and goodly plans for his family and how to attain the pinnacle of success in his business or career. His eagle eye acquired through his knowledge of God enables him to discern future occurrences, unlike a negligent man who is so short-sighted that he can barely see further than his nose because he has no special relationship with his maker, the all-knowing God.

Fourth, responsibleness is also a notable feature of diligence. A man who gladly assumes the moral obligation of taking care of his family without complains, and duty-bound to serve God with every fibre of his being is a diligent person. Wherefore… brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if you do these things, you shall never fall (2 Peter 1:10). So, it is an evidence of diligence when a man makes up his mind to diligently love the Lord, serve him with all his heart and soul, besides living according to his precepts (Deut 11:13), while Proverbs 7:15 states, I came forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face.

Faithfulness is also embedded in diligence. A diligent man is faithful in his affection towards God, his family and vocation. He is constant in adhering to his ideals as the northern star; he is consistent with facts, not deceptive and engages in straight dealings. There is nothing fraudulent about him. He is renowned for exactness and does not blow hot and cold at the same time. He is a man of precision and decisive in all his undertakings.

Patience is an additional moral fibre evident in a diligent fellow. To be patient is to endure trying moments with even temper. A patient man knows that an oak is not felled with one stroke, and that he must learn to walk before he can run, so he has clothed himself with uncomplaining courage. Patience is a virtue that strengthens the cords of diligence. John Mason opined: Don’t be impatient; remember, you can’t warm your hands by burning your fingers.

A tolerant man is a diligent chap. This chap will not start a storm in a teacup, fussing over inconsequential matters. He is so agreeable that he is mindful of the right and opinion of others because he  knows that intelligence is not evenly distributed. And that is what I call tactfulness.

In summation, I will say wisdom is the main strength of diligence. This is because wisdom is the timely and accurate application of knowledge; as such it is a perceptible trait in a diligent man. Every step and comment will be prompted by wisdom. Let us put the devil to shame by shunning negligence and embracing diligence in every facet of our lives to glorify the Most High God, our eternal redeemer and our maker.

The Fall and Redemption of Man. version 2.0

‘For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus’ (Romans 3 vs 23-24)

The fall of man necessitates his redemption from the consequences of the fall because God created man for his glory and praise. The fall of man originated from the disobedience of Adam, the first human creation of God, and Eve, his wife to strictly adhere to the instruction of God. God specifically instructed Adam, saying, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die’ (Genesis 2 vs18). And Adam must have told his wife the commandment of God regarding the consumption of anything that springs from the forbidden tree, because when the crafty serpent came to ask her: Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’ ‘The woman said to the serpent, We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ The serpent replied: ‘You will not certainly die. For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil’ (Genesis 3 vs 1-5).

The account of the fall of man is either literal or metaphoric, for it to be taken literally, let us consider the text in Genesis 3:6-7: ”When the woman SAW that the fruit of the tree was good for food and PLEASING TO THE EYE, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 THEN the EYES of both of them were OPENED, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.” Obviously this account cannot be taken literally due to the fact that in verse 6, Eve saw (with her eyes, which must have been opened as at that particular time), plus the fact that the account stated that it was pleasing to her eyes, and this was before EATING the fruit. Furthermore in verse 7, we were told that they covered themselves with fig leaves; now was it a coincidence that in the gospel of Mark, Chapter 11:12-25; Jesus Christ cursed the Fig tree and cleared the Temple of those who turned it into a den of thieves and robbers, taking into consideration that after the (2nd and Herod the Great’s refurbished) Temple was knocked down and built in 3 days by Jesus Christ (after Redemption, our bodies became the “Temple”)? So then, if the account in Genesis 3:6-7 was literal, how is it possible for somebody whose eyes were not opened to see that “the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye”?

Eve fell for the trick or the mind games of the devil ‘When’ she ‘saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it’ (Gen 3 vs 6). Their succumbing to the word of the devil is a direct disobedience to God’s word. Their disobedience was they allowed the lust of the eye (‘…pleasing to the eye…’), lust of the flesh (‘…saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food..’) and the pride of life (‘…for gaining wisdom…’) to override their obedience to the word of God. When the serpent said in Genesis 3:5; that man would be like God, knowing good from evil, by eating the fruit, wasn’t man already like God? Since the account of creation in Genesis 1:26 stated: ‘Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So why does man need to eat the forbidden fruit to be like God, when he was already created in the image of God?

Parallel to this was the temptation of Christ by the Devil when Satan took Christ to a vantage point and promised to give Christ everything as far as the eyes can see, in Mathew 4:9; and the devil said, “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” How can Satan give Christ, who according to the gospel of John 1:1-3; In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. Meaning, even angels and demons such as Lucifer were made by Him through Him, so how can Satan give his maker what belongs to his Maker? This can be referred to as mind games. In any case, little did Adam and Eve know that their disobedience has not only separated them from God, but has resulted in their spiritual death, due to the sin of disobedience (Romans 6:23; the wages of sin is death). They lost their glory, power, value and right standing with God; they could no longer fellowship with God through their spirit because their disobedient acts made their bodies and minds to deaden their spirit. Their spirit-man could no longer function in the likeness of the living God: they suddenly acquired a new worldly state of body and mind. Their act of disobedience has translated them into the kingdom of darkness, they were not able to fulfill God’s purpose to live on earth to fellowship with God and to return to heaven after their earthly stay. As God the Holy Spirit stated through Prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 15:22; To obey is better than sacrifice. With disobedience, this necessitates sacrifice, in order to bring life from death.

God, being a merciful God had to put a plan of redemption in place in order to ensure the fulfilment of his initial plan for man which is written in the book of Jeremiah 29 vs 11: ‘For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and future…’ Although it was Adam that sinned, but ‘Nevertheless death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come’ (Romans 5 vs 14). This is because Adam, being the first creature of God on earth had everyone in the whole universe in his loins. And that is why, Rom 3 vs 23 clearly states that ‘For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.’  Consequently, in order to deliver man from sin and damnation, God, Himself had to come down, see Luke 1:35; “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God’, and be born as man (Son of Man) Jesus Christ, to remit our sins, deliver us from the power of sin and the grip of the devil by dying in our place, the ultimate sacrifice: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ and that is why we ‘all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus’ (Romans 3 vs 24). ‘For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive’ (1 Cori 15 vs 22).

We are expected to learn lessons from the experience of Adam and Eve. The crux of their sin that led to the fall of man is disobedience. They failed to abide by the commandment of God because of the lust of the eye, flesh and pride. Though Adam and Eve were man and wife, Adam probably was not aware that fellowship with God is a personal thing: personal relationship with God. Secondly, rather than caution and deter his wife from listening to the tricky enquiry of the serpent, he kept quiet, for the Bible tells us that: ‘She also gave some to her husband, who was with her’, so this information tells us that Adam was with Eve when the devil was luring her to disobey God. Husbands should be courageous enough to advice their wives when they are engaging in wrong acts, and not keep quiet. After disobeying God, Eve lured her husband into committing the same sin because she knew that Adam loved her; and unfortunately, he fell because of his love for her. Another lesson is that women should not take their husbands’ love for granted and lure them into going against the precepts of God. True love between couples edifies and emancipates not enslaves and enchain. In everything we do and say we should always bear in mind that ‘Jesus said… ‘Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little one to stumble. So watch yourselves’ (Luke vs 17:1-3).

In order to maintain a good relationship with God and not fall into sin, we should surrender to Him in every way, according to Proverbs 3:5-6; Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. How do we submit to God? Here are some relevant tips:

We must be obedient to God’s precepts: True love for our God is obedience to his word, for obedience is better than sacrifice. 1 Samuel 15:22 asks: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. We are all familiar with the story of Saul, the first King in Israel, his disobedience made God to reject him as the king and his posterity, the Spirit of God left him, afterwards he was tormented by an evil spirit, and eventually he died. For ‘We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, ‘I know him’, but does not do what he commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him. Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did’ (1 John 2 vs 3-6). As such, for our own good, we are obligated to emulate Jesus according to Philippians 2:8, who ‘…being found in appearance as a man, humbled himself by becoming obedient to death-even death on a cross!’; For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy’ (Hebrews 10:14).

We must live by faith: We surrender our lives to God through actual acts of faith. It is significant to note that in several places in the Bible, Holy Spirit tells us that the just shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2 vs 4; the righteous person will live by his faithfulness. Romans 1 vs17; Galatians 3 vs 11 and Hebrews 10 vs 38). The just are those who have been freely justified by the redeeming blood of Jesus; however, despite the fact that we have experienced a spiritual rebirth,  ‘…without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and he rewards those who earnestly seek him’ (Hebrews 11 vs 6). This is because faith evidenced our complete submission to God’s will. When we live according to the instruction given in Proverbs 3:5-6, then our faith is in action. It reads: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight’. So, you are living by faith ‘If you would direct your heart right and spread your hand to Him’ in anticipation of his guidance regarding every issue of your life (Job 11 vs 13). ‘For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it (Mark 8 vs 35). We can see that it is always better to ‘Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes’ (Ps 37 vs 7); for ‘…though the wicked spring up like grass and all the evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever’ but ‘The righteous’ in faith ‘will flourish like the palm tree, they will grow like a cedar in Lebanon’ (Psalm 92 vs 7 and 12). Faith in God made the disciples to leave everything and follow God, and this is a good illustration of surrendering to God’s will: Peter told Jesus in Mark 10 vs 28, ‘Behold we have left everything and followed you’.

We should not murmur against God: This is a sequel to living by faith, for when we have a resolute and unshakeable faith in God, then we will not murmur against him. Anxiety about providence, about the world, fears about what the world can do to us, grumbling and complains are tokens that we have not actually surrendered to God. When we murmur against our God, and Father, be it hard out or in our hearts because ‘Before a word is on’ our ‘tongue’ the ‘LORD’, knows ‘it completely’ (Psalm 139 vs 4). When we murmur, we are either directly or indirectly judging or quarrelling with God. God knows this, and that is why in Isaiah 45:9, God says: “Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker– An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth! Will the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’ Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands‘? Our confession should be ‘But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand’ (Isaiah 64:8). Thus. Jesus taught us to pray saying: ‘May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven’ (Luke 11 vs 2).

We should dedicate our lives and body to God: When we live in surrender to God indeed, then our dedication manifests through the demonstration of fruitful spiritual acts. Our daily living demonstrates love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5 vs 22-23). On the contrary, a life that is ladened with disobedience cascades sexual immorality, impurity, and wickedness, idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, disagreement/rebellion, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like, I warn you,… that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God (Gal 5 vs 19-21). ‘Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship’ (Romans 12:1) ‘and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God’ (Romans 6:13). So as Paul rightly testifies in Galatians 2:20: ‘I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me’, and that should be our believers’ motto that will enable us to maintain our obedience to God and his word.

We should be guided by the Holy Spirit: When a believer has been baptized by the Holy Spirit, he/she is guided by Him; hence the believer is enabled through the Spirit’s guidance to be obedient to God. Romans 8 vs 14 tells us that ‘For those who are led by the Spirit of God (and are obedient to his leading) are the children of God.’ In our successful walk and work with God, Paul recognises the significance of being led by the Spirit, hence, he says:  ‘For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding…’ (Colossians 1:9), ‘And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation (profitless), but be filled with the Spirit’ (Ephesians 5:18).

The summary of this exhortation on obedience is to listen to Jesus and do accordingly in Matthew 16:24-25; Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.  Disobedience is a sin, and as Rom 2 vs12-13 states: ‘All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight but those who obey the law who will be declared righteous’. When you have been baptized by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit Himself enables you to obey the Law and most important of law is, love God and man, for there is no law against love, and acts of obedience to God are done out of love; for obedience, even unto death, is better than sacrifice.

We pray that God will give us the grace to be obedient to him always in Jesus’ name. Amen.
