The Qualities of a Businessman

A businessman is a man of profitable affairs. He is a capitalist who engages in industrial or commercial enterprise so as to make profit. Then, what are the qualities of a businessman? Quality talks about the essential and distinguishing attributes of a man of business, the grade of excellence or worth of a businessman. Here is a list of some qualities.

Truthfulness: A seasoned businessman should cultivate the habit of truthfulness in all his affairs/dealings because honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom. Truthfulness is undoubtedly a potent charm that will bear him safely through the world’s entanglements. Aside from this, the love of truth will not only make him act with sincerity, assuredly giving birth to less error, but it will also lead him to the highest intellectual development. The result of the goodness that is embedded in truthfulness (honesty), combined with the wisdom attained from intellectual development cannot be overestimated. Both contribute immensely to the great success of a business.

Principledness: Furthermore, a good businessman should be able to formulate godly and beneficial principles and abide by them. For instance, whether to sell on credit or not. A. W. Tozers said, ‘The choices of life not compulsions, reveal character.’ Even the Bible says, ‘As a man thinks, so is he, and as a man chooses, so is he.’ The success of a business lies in the principles adopted. Without well-defined principles when thrown in the sea of action, the businessman will be without rudder (steering/discretion) and compass (guidance).

Visional: A worthy businessman must be a man of great vision; he should train himself in the art of seeing the unseen. His eyes should discern opportunities, while his ears should thirst for directions. He should be able to visualize the future prospects of his enterprise. A businessman who dotes solely on current realities can never achieve much success. Herbert Casson said: ‘Safety first has been the saying of human race… but it has never been the motto of leaders. A leader must face danger. He must take risk, the blame and the brunt of the storm.’ Why frustrate yourself with shallow water, if you want to see if you can really swim? So, don’t burn the bridges of opportunities with shallow reasoning. To succeed, you must first dream of your success. Successful people are first dreamers. Enlarge your reasoning horizon!

Punctuality: A well-groomed businessman should deck himself with punctuality because it is the soul of successful business. Being punctual means doing things at the proper time, and never late in keeping appointments. An unpunctual person will ever be a source of annoyance both to himself and others. Failure to be punctual in keeping appointments is a sign of contempt, disrespect toward clients and others. It is harmful to the success of business. Moreover, punctuality in all endeavours is a signification of diligence. The Bible corroborated that a man who is diligent in his business will stand before kings.

Good disposition: The success of any business depends largely on the temperament/disposition of the owner. It cannot be gainsaid that a businessman with happy disposition will attract and keep more customers, while a gloomy one will chase away lucrative customers. As a businessman/woman, study your temperament and make necessary adjustments if you need to.
