In religion and folklore, Hell is an afterlife location in which evil souls are subjected to punitive suffering, often torture as eternal punishment after death.
Hell is existence in body and or soul without God, according to Mathew 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Death is separation from God. The wages of sin is death, which is found in Roman 6:23; For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Sin separates us from God. Hell, or grave is referred to as “sheol” in the new testament. Grave is the place of the dead, God is a God of the living, Christ explained this in Luke 20:35-38; But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
Therefore, the grave is a place for those who are separated from God. The word “sheol” is used in the Scriptures, in the new testament, represents or carries the meaning therefore of Hell or the place of the dead, grave. Which stands for a place without God. The place where our Lord Jesus Christ went to after he was crucified, to set the captives free, which He did. This gives us an insight to one of His statements on the cross Mark 15:34, when He said “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”), probably indicating His being separated from God the Father (signifying His being in hell). After which He rose on the third day, on Easter Sunday.
