Distinction between Who and What

#Psalm119v163

Often times people confuse a ‘who’ with a ‘what’. “Who” is used when asking the identify of people. “What” is used when asking the identity of an object, or an attribute of a person, or a skill or activity that a person is engaged in or practises.

When the Psalmist makes the statement in Psalm 119:163; I hate and detest falsehood, but I love your law. This can be paraphrased to mean God detest falsehood, this is an attribute or activity that a person engages in. Psalmist is NOT saying here that God detest the person. This is a clear distinction between a ‘who’ and a ‘what’.

As a fan of #ChelseaFC, the current Head Coach #GrahamPotter, when asked by journalists in October 2022, how he manages star players, puts it succinctly, saying that the superstar players have only one head, not two, meaning, the players are human being (‘who’) first of all, then they are gifted players (‘what’), professional football players.

If we take the time period 2010 to 2022, and we take the following people: #AlexFerguson, #PepGuardiola, #CarloAncelotti, #DavidMoyes, #LouisVanGaal, #JoséMourinho, #OleGunnarSolskjær, #ErikTenHag, #AntonioConte, #MaurizioSarri, #FrankLampard, #ThomasTuchel, and #GrahamPotter. Now take the following football clubs; #ChelseaFC, #ManchesterUnited, #ManchesterCity, #FCBarcelona, #RealMadridFC, and #FCBayernMunich. Put into this mix the following roles; Club owner, Chairman, executive and non-executive directors, director of football, performance director, transfer, and acquisition director, scouting coach, Manager, and Head Coach. These are all ‘what’, that is the roles, filled by ‘who’, that is people. Success or failure accompanies the distinction between a ‘who’ and a ‘what’, or the blurring of the lines between the two.

Pep Guardiola cannot always win the #ChampionsLeague irrespective of the football club, and neither has #RealMadridFC won the #ChampionsLeague consecutively every year during the period in question.
