Jeremiah 24:7; I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.
Jeremiah 31:33; “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Hebrews 12:11; No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
The mind can be trained in certain aspects, but the heart can not be trained. The heart in this case is used as a synonym for a person’s nature, or character attributes, such as kindness, envy, jealousy, compassion, empathy, and so on.
Most people break rules and regulations, especially if they think they can get away with it. Though some people follow some rules and regulations. There is a saying that can be paraphrased as: ‘You can take the person out of the ghetto, but you can not take the ghetto out of a person’. Most people that display anti-social behaviours, can temporarily keep it in check, while under observation, but the moment they are no longer under observation, or the motivation for the controlled behaviour is no longer present, they revert back to type.
This does not mean that there is no place for training, however it simply means that observation or the motivation has to be in place, to maintain the desired behaviour. Character attributes that is second nature to a person, do not need constant observation, or motivation, or positive reinforcement, to maintain. The Scripture with regards to the Lord and the heart of men, consistently states that the Lord will give new heart to the chosen ones. Does this confirms that the heart can not be trained, but the mind can. It is the heart that leads the mind, and not the other way round.
This is comparable to what Jesus Christ taught in Mathew 15:3-9; Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honour your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honour their father or mother’ with it. Thus, you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: “‘These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’
