The Big Bang Theory is the leading explanation about how the universe began. At its simplest, it says the universe as we know it started with a small singularity, then inflated over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos that we know today. Because current instruments don’t allow astronomers to peer back at the universe’s birth, much of what we understand about the Big Bang Theory comes from mathematical formulas and models. Astronomers can, however, see the “echo” of the expansion through a phenomenon known as the cosmic microwave background. On the other hand, you have the explanation of God into how the universe began.
About eleven years ago, in a discussion with my colleagues [we worked at a Software Development House: Senior programmers, software architects, software designers, and software engineers], who were of the opinion that the Bible was not factual, their argument was predicated on the assumption that the totalling of the number of years mentioned in the Bible, which amounted to between five and six thousand years, does not tally with ‘physical evidence’ from archaeological discoveries with its attendant ‘Carbon dating’. Remains of ‘early man’ found somewhere in Africa was dated back to ~30,000 years. Furthermore, there is Darwinism, a theory of biological evolution developed by the English naturalist Charles Darwin (1809–1882) and others, stating that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual’s ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. Meaning, you and I come from the monkey and ape family.
Homo erectus, (Latin: “upright man”) extinct species of the human genus (Homo), perhaps an ancestor of modern humans (Homo sapiens). H. erectus most likely originated in Africa, though Eurasia cannot be ruled out. Regardless of where it first evolved, the species seems to have dispersed quickly, starting about 1.9 million years ago (mya) near the middle of the Pleistocene Epoch, moving through the African tropics, Europe, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. This history has been recorded directly if imprecisely by many sites that have yielded fossil remains of H. erectus. At other localities, broken animal bones and stone tools have indicated the presence of the species, though there are no traces of the people themselves. H. erectus was a human of medium stature that walked upright. The braincase was low, the forehead was receded, and the nose, jaws, and palate were wide. The brain was smaller and the teeth larger than in modern humans. H. erectus appears to have been the first human species to control fire, some 1,000,000 years ago. The species seems to have flourished until some 200,000 years ago (200 kya) or perhaps later before giving way to other humans including Homo sapiens.
So, going back to the debate with my colleagues, apparently the bone of contention was the report in Genesis chapter one, from which most of us that have read the Biblical report assumed that God created Creation [The Beginning, the Universe or Multiverse, the Big Bang up to Homo sapiens] in six days. It is from this that my colleagues concluded that the Bible was not factual. My viewpoint, then goes like this: I remember my referring them to Psalm 90, one of the verses of which states that “ a thousand years is like a day in the sight of God”, and therefore the ‘six days’ could be ‘X’ number of years or period of time. One of my colleagues surmised that, I apparently do not take the Bible literarily. Obviously, Biblical accounts have metaphoric elements to some of them. I do remember vividly that God posed a significant question in the book of Job, chapter 38, which goes something like “Who was there, when He the Lord created the heavens and earth? Now, if neither you, nor I, were there, and all our ‘so-called’ evidences are ‘best guesses’ and estimates, then whatever ‘we’ conclude or surmise is moot. We could turn it around and ask for evidence from God, and in the absence of such, conclude that the Bible is not factual and that God does not exist.
However, before we rush to do that, let us highlight certain areas of the Biblical account:
- In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness [Black Hole!] was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light [The Big Bang!]. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day [whose time calibration; man or Gods’ ?].
- And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” [space!] And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day [whose time calibration; man or Gods’ ?].
- And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds [Darwinism crap!]. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day [whose time calibration; man or Gods’ ?].
- And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” [now we get to man’s calibration of time] And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars [our solar system(sun + 8 planets + lots of moons) is just a single star]. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day [this section of the Creation account makes it obvious that the “Days” mentioned, totalling ‘Six days of Creation activities by God’ were not by our reckoning, but by His, Gods’].
But then, do not take my word for it, if you do not have a Bible, check online and verify the account for yourself. After which, see if you can obtain or already have, independent, corroborative, or non-corroborative evidence for the existence of God. By the way He does not need to prove to you that He exists, He only does that to those He had chosen, elected beforehand.
