The Pillars of Motivation

Motivation is life because it is a motive for living. Motivation emanates from the heart and not from experience, and that is why it is an inner desire of a person to accomplish a specific or special task irrespective of any precarious challenge. Motivation is a volitional act that gives purpose and direction to every person. Every worthy action has its root in motivation.

Pillars of motivation are the mainstay of motivation because they are the central cohesive sources that support and stabilise it.

The first pillar of motivation is interestingness. The implication of this is that whatever you are doing must be attractive enough to hold your attention. It is your interest in what you are doing that gives you a sense of concern when things are not going well, and you look for ways to make things right so as to achieve your goal. Interest, daily bath you with curiosity to seek knowledge in what you are doing so as to achieve laudable  output always because it will give you a sense of fulfilment.

The second pillar of motivation is knowledge. Knowledge is having a clear perception of what you want to do. Knowledge unfolds purpose. It energises you and manifest decisively in every step you take in order to accomplish your goal or purpose. Knowledge encompasses knowing the blueprint of God for your life, factual information and skill required to achieve your vision or purpose in life. Knowledge is a cardinal motivation because it gives you a clear, purposeful, and unimpeded direction, besides functioning as a stimulant that will keep you going when faced with discouraging situations. Knowledge reinforces purpose and enables you to remain focused.

The third pillar of motivation is purpose. Purpose is the function of your endeavour or task. It is the expected outcome of your task, and consequently guides all your decisions and actions. The desire to be a blessing to the people around you and the world at large is a positive motivation that makes you joyous, even in the face of impediments, so whatever you intend to do must have a utilitarian function. In essence, desire is synonymic with purpose. So, when God sees that what you are doing will bless lives, he is sure to remove the hinderances. The usefulness of your endeavour has a way of stimulating your interest, determination, self-discipline, and enthusiasm. You want people to be blessed by what you do, for the Bible tells us that it is more blessed to give than to receive. When you are purposeful, then your purpose is achievable.

The fourth anchor of motivation is determination. Interest precedes determination, so if you are not interested in what you are doing, be it spiritual or secular, then the determination to succeed is nil. Your determination to succeed in your ministry and secular work continuously baptises you with strength and zeal; it feels you with vigour. The same thing applies to marriage and friendship, if you are not interested in your spouse or friend, then you really do not care a hoot if both failed. Hence, you must be interested in your spouse, for marriage or friendship is meant to be enjoyed and not endured. Your determination to succeed will show in everything you do and say. So you need to gird yourself with purposefulness because it motivates a purposeful purpose.

The fifth pillar of strength for motivation is discipline. To be disciplined is to obey the rules of spiritual and secular authorities as stipulated by God. Once again, interest has a crucial role to play in this area. It is your interest in what you are doing that will spur you to put a check on any act of indiscipline you may want to display.

The sixth pillar is enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is also embedded in interestingness. Enthusiasm is a feeling of excitement that maintains and fuels eagerness to see things done the way it should be, and on time. Enthusiasm is a synergy for motivation because it empowers you to work; it is a source of energy, fuelling your action even in the face of challenging discouragement. No one can be fulfilled without enthusiasm, and that is why it is not only referred to as aliveness but a spirit as well.

In recap, real motivation comes from the heart; it cannot be acquired or developed, that is after every emotional needs have been met. It is however the duty of every person to find the best way to uncork it. Interest is the driving axle for knowledge, purpose, enthusiasm, discipline and determination because of its driving and coordinating power.

A prolific writer wrote: “Real motivation comes from a man knowing where he is going, and how he is going to get there. You can see it in man’s eyes when he knows where he is going.” And of course the end result of motivation is always action cum fulfilment.

Remain blessed in Jesus’ name.
